On 10 September, 2011 Martijn Alsters and I played a duet for flute and organ in the Grote Kerk in Breda. The organ part of this duet is a written composition, which crystallized out of improvisation. The flute part was improvised on the spot. The result is a cheerful piece, which plays a role in my artistic research Combining the avant-garde and the historical in improvisation, composition and interpretation at Leiden University. Through this research I aim at, among other things, making new, 21st century music with a nimbleness and transparency in the spirit of the 18th century. Actually, Martijn Alsters and I are preparing a full program for flute, alto flute, piccolo and organ. The audio recording in the following video has been made by Gerard Maters.
Op 10 september 2011 speelden Martijn Alsters en ik een stuk voor fluit en orgel, genaamd Listening to the fairies, in de Grote Kerk te Breda. De orgelpartij van dit duet is een improvisatorisch tot stand gekomen, maar uiteindelijk volledig uitgeschreven compositie. De fluitpartij werd ter plekke geïmproviseerd. Het resultaat is een onbekommerd, vrolijk stuk, dat een rol speelt in mijn artistiek onderzoek Combining the avant-garde and the historical in improvisation, composition and interpretation aan de Universiteit Leiden. Met dit onderzoek beoog ik onder meer nieuwe, 21e eeuwse muziek te maken met een lichtvoetigheid en transparantie in de geest van de 18e eeuw. Momenteel werken Martijn Alsters en ik aan een volledig programma voor fluit, altfluit, piccolo en orgel. De audio opname is gemaakt door Gerard Maters.
